  1. My favorite Alice and Wonderland illustration is the on where she is stopped by the egg shaped guards. I really liked the techniques that he used to make the faces and I also like the cross contours that where used to make the background. My favorite dormouse illustration was the one with the singing man. i thought it was really clever how the artist used cross hatching to blend the animal in the background. I also like the emotion displayed in that piece. I really want to try to use cross hatching to make my work more unique. Like the way the animal blended into the background of the dormouse piece. I am also going to try and find a way to incorporate some sort of symbolic twist into my artwork.

  2. My favorite Alice picture is the one of the fish giving a letter to a frog. I like how the natural expressions of the animals fit so well in context; the fish’s mouth is open like he’s announcing who the letter is from, and the frog has a very smug look, like: “I am a very important frog who gets mail.” My favorite Dore picture is the fall from paradise. You know it’s space because you can see how round the Earth is, but he makes space look like an extension of the sky, which is really cool. I’ll try to use the cross hatching and contour lines, since that gives a lot of shape to the figures, and exaggerate the expressions and poses since that makes the story clearer.

  3. For the Alice’s in wonderland illustration, my favorite one is called “card attacking Alice”. I like the showing of the card movement, which by using the vertical lines. What’s more, I like the dynamic showing that all the animals run away. Also, the cross hatching technique on Alice’s dress makes it more realistic. As for Dore illustration, my favorite is the first picture in the video, which is grandmother and mother reading the story for the mother’s seven children. The children all surround the grandmother, stare her with their big eyes, listening carefully. And there is the youngest sister sitting on her grandmother’s knee and seems like going to put her finger into her mouth. And some of kids hug their brothers and their sisters, and some of them hug a toy. I really like lovely and warm family atmosphere that this drawing shows and also all the emotion showing on both children and adults’ faces. Inspired by their drawing, i’m going to use more cross hatching to show the reality of the person or objects, and also using more hatching in the background. In addition, I’m going to present the emotion of the character by showing the expression on their face.

  4. My favorite Alice in Wonderland inspired picture was probably the “Briar Rose” by Jane Yolen. It was of a black and white flower, in a very real and beautiful way, in an almost artificial setting. It also is surrounded by barbed wire, sort of mixing the gentle flower with the harshness of barbed wire. My favorite Dore piece is the piece where Alice is in front of a man holding a set of keys, the facial expressions on them both are incredibly done and show the mystical emotion being felt as well as the importance in the keys. The man has an insane look on his face, like he is explaining something incredibly important, and is is important that she not miss a thing he is saying. Her expreission is one of intimidation, acknowledgment of what he is saying but also worry about what the outcome will be. I am going to try and Incorporate the composition of the first work with the meaning and expression in the second.
