Memorial Day blog Art 1 – Due 5/28

Standard

Look at the link below and comment on the ways Dix uses art to protest war.

How does he use art techniques to affect you, the viewer? Consider both his use of style as well as his choice of subject.

What do you think are his most important tools as an artist to convey a powerful message?

What single work most affected you (intellectually and/or emotionally)?

Art 1,  do an hour sketchbook Memorial Day drawing or collage and mixed media.

As noted on the site: “Wilhelm Heinrich Otto Dix (2 December 1891 — 25 July 1969) was a German painter and printmaker, noted for his ruthless and harshly realistic depictions of Weimar society and the brutality of war. Along with George Grosz, he is widely considered one of the most important artists of the Neue Sachlichkeit.”

Spend at least 15 minutes looking at the examples of the mixed media journals in the link below. These were collaboratively and randomly made by tens of thousands. Be sure to touch on the different categories. Comment on what you found, what interested you, what you felt when looking into the personal thoughts left by strangers, and inspiration you get from this mixed media art.  Then do an hour on mixed media sketchbook pages in the style of some of the journals you liked. Keep track of your time on the back.

Field Trip Art 2,3,4,AP Lebbeus Woods – Due 5/16

Standard

There are 2 major shows we will be visiting at the museum. Gary Winogrand at 1:00 which will be the main focus of the Photo students (and they will have a worksheet to fill out at the museum in regard to it, you will not).  The photo students will help prepare an information sheet for you about Winogrand and the works to help you get the most out of this show which we will go over in class on Monday. This show will be very valuable to you even though it is not your main focus.

After the Winogrand show, students will  visit  the Lebbeus Woods show, which will be the main focus of the Art 2,3,4, AP students (and you will have a worksheet in regard to this show.  If a student is taking 2 classes, they will choose which worksheet to do.) In order for the Photo students to get the most out of this show, you will help prepare an information sheet about Lebbeus Woods for the Photo students to go over on Monday. This show will be very valuable to them as well since his studies, drawings, models, and abstractions reflect an extensive and expansive thought process.

In preparation for the museum trip, visit the following sites about the Lebbeus Woods retrospective show at SFMOMA. Read the first 2 articles completely and look at the works. From the museum overview of the show, commentary, and the review of the show, take notes on the sheet given in class, answering the questions, clearly and legibly with many notes and ideas.

Lebbeus Woods review: Artistry Over Architecture

In addition, look at the following site to see his blog and if you want, read his thoughtful and substantial post about architecture and drawing by Michelangelo. At least, look at the beautiful drawings.
