Art 1 – Color in nature Due 12/3

Standard

Color combinations in nature

Look at the video of the chameleon, the cuttle fish, and the article about color combinations in nature.

These examples are based on the natural drive to camouflage for protection or to attract for reproduction.

Can color also be emotional in effect?  What kinds of emotions can it convey?

What are you trying to convey with your color choices (besides light and dark) in the distortion grid?

If you could borrow any ideas from natural colors, which would you choose for your  distorted face project?  Explain why.

Share a site which has interesting color effects.

In your sketchbook, collect 3-5  small examples of interesting color combinations from nature (attach a sample or a magazine swatch, illustrating it.)

Do a 1 hour drawing of anything which uses the color combinations from one of your samples. You may do any style of drawing but it should be in color. Mark your time on the back of the page.

Art 1 – Due 11/26

Standard

Read the following 2 articles and watch the video about David Alfred Siqueros who made an impact on many American artists, as well as on Rosenquist, as learned during class.

Siqueiros and Indelible Connection

Siqueiros in LA

Discuss the most interesting aspects to you about  the creation of this Siqueiros mural?

What are the most important aspects to you about the social and historic context ?

How did Siqueiros and this mural influence other artists?

Do you see a connection with Rosenqist’s F-111? How do these works differ?

In your sketchbook, working for 1 hour and marking the time on the back, do a Siqueiros inspired drawing, relevant to an issue you care about.

AP Art Drawing & 2D Design – 11/26, 12/3, 12/10

Standard

Choose  any 2 artists, each week, for the next 3 weeks. Research online, getting a clear idea of their style and imagery, and the art historical context. Due every Monday.

Comment on the following:

Name them and post a reference to a particular work.

How would you describe their style (visual and physical characteristics) and artistic concerns (ideas about aesthetic presence)?

How do they compare and contrast with each other (you are choosing any 2 each week to comment on and compare/contrast)?

Briefly, what is the art historical context for each (other dominant art styles, ways they built on previous art by others and led to later art by others in the same media)?

(Please note: choose artists that have a reputation in the art historical context, and evaluate that on the basis of whether or not they have had a museum show or are in a collection of an art museum.)

Art 2 – Romare Bearden Due 11/15

Standard

Watch this video on Bearden’s Jazz works and pay special note to the rare clip of him in his studio.

Watch the clip on Bearden from Robert Hughes “Empire of Signs”  (after Rauschenberg, around 2:15 until 6:00)

Comment  thoughtfully on ideas concerning:

a: the development of his art,

b: the uniqueness of his style in the 60’s and 70’s,

c: his manner of linking personal themes from African American culture with art historical precedents or broader humanistic themes, and

d: anything else you may want to add to the discussion about Bearden.
